BLACKLIGHT TANGO DOWN REVIEW![]() Posted by Alevop on Jul 29, 2010 09:02 (36 days ago) |
The gaming world seems to have been obsessed with multiplayer shooters in recent years. So it made a lot of sense when Zombie studio’s set out to offer players the same high quality, addictive multiplayer action that you find in most retail FPS games, into one fairly cheap downloadable content package, particularly with the success that the likes of Battlefield 1943 enjoyed. While the game is largely multiplayer focused, there is a small campaign style mode called Black ops. Unfortunately it seems to have been made just so it could tick the box saying it’s included. You can play solo, or with 3 other players, but the terrible checkpoint system, lack of story, and the fact that it’s basically just multiplayer with hordes of poor AI, means that it’s not really worth spending too much time with. It seems to me they should have put 100% of their focus on the multiplayer, or taken the time to make it more substantial.
![]() The online multiplayer offers everything that you have come to expect from this type of game. There is a sizeable customization and upgrade feature that lets you unlock new items and customize your weapons and armour as you progress through the games ranking system. However, the presentation of the games menus look dreadful and are extremely cluttered, which makes it very hard to navigate or even understand.
There are a couple of nice gadgets that you have available from the start. The Hyper Reality Visor, which can only be used for a limited time, lets you see through walls and highlights enemies and other important objects. The Digi grenade also has a nice effect; when thrown its causes the world around it to become pixelated, and enemies visors stop working so they can only see a blue error screen.
There are a healthy 12 game modes offered up in Blacklight, offering a lot of variety, but it’s the gameplay that isn’t up to scratch. Theres something about the movement and the shooting that doesn’t feel quite right, and Spawn camping is what you can expect from almost every match, but worryingly that’s just the way the maps have been designed. Each team has one single spawn area at either end of the map that opposing players can’t enter. But this leads to people waiting outside ready to shoot as soon as you pop your head round the corner, and it doesn’t stop people from throwing grenades in either. And once you’re inevitably pegged down in your area, there is no way to fight back again.
![]() The biggest problem though is how generic the game it is. It doesn’t take any risks at all and everything in it you will have seen many times before. Though we probably should have expected that from the title; how many times have we heard the words Tango Down in shooting games now?
Graphically the game is very good but this does nothing to overshadow anything else. The original concept was good and if you’re a massive FPS fan who is dying for a brand new multiplayer fix, then you may just get some enjoyment from Blacklight, but with the games overbearing issues and troublesome network problems, it’s hard for me to recommend playing it to anyone.
